Pyrolysis involves the reaction of ethane, propane or butane with steam at an elevated temperature and a constant pressure. No catalyst is used and the temperature is related to the rate of feed. Usually a mean temperature of 1525 F (829 C) is desirable. Lower temperatures do not give good yields and higher temperatures, unless the flow is changed produce undesirable tars. Higher temperatures are used in Europe where naptha is used as the feed stock.
