Stainless steels have shown promise as candidate materials of construction for major pieces of equipment in distillation-type desalination plants, both from a technical and economic viewpoint. For this reason The Committee of Stainless Steel Producers of the American Iron and Steel Institute, in cooperation with the Office of Saline Water, is sponsoring a comprehensive testing program to demonstrate the applicability of stainless steels to desalination plant service.
