Aluminum is a widely used structural material and generally has satisfactory corrosion resistance. However, under some conditions, the corrosion of unprotected aluminum is such that protective paints must be used. Naval aircraft operating in marine atmospheres are in this category, and paint systems based on chromate primers are used in this service. These systems have proved quite useful, but problems are still encountered in certain areas, such as at rivets or at scratches, cracks, or other defects in the paint film. It was the purpose of the research described here to determine the mechanisms of corrosion of aluminum under a paint film and its inhibition by chromate primers and to apply this knowledge to the development of improved primers.
