When the literature relating to the performance of materials in contact with salt or brackish water is examined, the reader is impressed with the volumes of information. Closer examination, however, shows that most of the published data -- the great majority in fact -- relates to materials in contact with ambient temperature fluids. There has been an increased effort in recent years, sparked by the Office of Saline Water program, to obtain information on how materials can be expected to perform in equipment used to produce potable water.
