In two research programs for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, IIT Research Institute studied the inhibition of aluminum corrosion in ethylene glycol/distilled water solutions. These solutions are used as coolant fluids in spacecraft and are deaerated before use. The spacecraft cooling systems are closed and are predominately aluminum but also contain some stainless steels, nickel, soft solder, and non-metallic materials. The metal surface area/liquid volume ratio is high, approximately 2.7 sq cm/ml. Temperatures in these systems vary from -40 to 115 F.
