Type 430 stainless steel is a 17 percent chromium stainless steel having good strength and good resistance to corrosion in many media. This steel is an old standby in the family of stainless steels having been produced in all forms for many years. Quite sometime ago it became evident that Type 430 stainless steel weldments in their as-welded condition displayed rather low resistance to attack when exposed to corrosive media. Corrosion in the weld area generally encompassed both the weld metal and weld heat affected areas of the base metal. Additional work to understand and possibly correct this problem appeared justified because of the alloy’s desirable properties for applications where welding was to be applied. As compared with the austenitic stainless steels, reduced weld distortion and better resistance to failure by stress corrosion are the principal advantages offered by Type 430 stainless steel.
