High voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission systems which will introduce current into the earth pose potential problems for underground metallic structures. The natural gas industry had opportunities to observe the effects of earth current on pipelines during tests of an HVDC system in 1963 and 1964. The need to learn more about the effects of earth currents on pipelines led directly to sponsorship of research at Battelle’s Columbus Laboratories by the Pipeline Research Committee of the American Gas Association.
