Selected stainless steel and nickel-base alloys, as well as a FeCrAlY cladding, were evaluated for potential use as a high-temperature heat exchanger in a closed cycle gas turbine application. Corrosion probe exposures were conducted in pulverized coal-fired boilers at three plants that burned coals with sulfur contents from 0.5 to 3.1 percent. Specimen temperatures ranged from 1,000 to 1,600°F (538 to 870°C). The highest corrosion rates, up to 14 mils/yr (0.35 mm/yr), occurred with AISI 304H stainless steel. For the other alloys tested, 310H, 800H, 86, 617, 618E, 671, and FeCrAlY, corrosion rates were all less than 5 mils/yr (0.13 mm/yr).
