Abstract
Modern coatings are complex polymeric systems which are expected to fulfill a broad spectrum of tasks. Quality of the coating material, the specification, and the application, including the necessary surface preparation, can impact the actual life obtained and the failure mode when the design life is not met. The investigation of coating failures is most efficiently accomplished through a systematic approach. The steps for that systematic approach are presented.
