ABSTRACT

Regulatory changes are forcing rapid development of higher solids epoxy / amine coatings. The move towards ultra-low VOC levels seems inevitable but film performance does not need to be compromised to achieve compliance. One viable option for the railcar industry is to use heated solventless epoxy coatings. This paper gives a basic overview of solventless coatings technology for the railcar industry. The purpose of this work is to establish a better understanding of the advantages and current difficulties with the use of solventless epoxy coatings . These coatings are being used today and they have demonstrated significant performance advantages. Continued development of low viscosity resins, curing agents and modifiers by raw material suppliers increases the probability of a successful future for solventless epoxy coatings in the railcar industry.
