Abstract
Magnesium anodes are an effective source of cathodic protection (CP) current in many situations including coated pipelines. The use of magnesium anodes to protect two 22 cm (8 inch) coated pipelines since 1975 is described. Pipe potentials that satisfy the NACE-69-92 criterion are being obtained at a current density of 0.03 mA/m2 (0.003 mA/ft2). Anode bed costs for protection are 3/4 cent (USA) per linear meter of pipe per year ($12/mile/year). Cost for anode bed, annual potential measurements, and close interval potential surveys every five years is 4 cents (USA) per linear meter per year ($64/mile/year).
