Prior to revenue operation on the WMATA Upper A-Route, the operators of nine high pressure natural gas pipelines indicated that they had a possible stray current interference problem. An ambitious test program was conducted which resulted in solutions which were both unique and innovative. The solutions included a combination of traction power segregation and the development of special fasteners for the wood tie and ballast tracks. The program when completed proved to be successful and the stray current activity associated with the Upper A-Route was virtually eliminated.
