Abstract
Electric powered mass transit systems create stray currents which can cause severe corrosion damage that often result in leaks in ductile and cast iron water piping. The proper use of electrical isolation in pipelines can greatly reduce the total amount of stray current damage that will occur. For complete stray current protection, a system of magnesium anode groundbeds should be installed and connected to the pipeline through diodes to control the direction of stray current flow.
