The collection of accurate stray current field data on existing utility piping has been a serious concern especially in areas of new transit systems. Extensive testing was performed on existing water piping in conjunction with the construction and operation of the new Baltimore Light Rail Transit System. Testing was performed with instruments connected both to piping appurtenances such as hydrants and valves as well as to specially installed test facilities. The test results that were obtained during these stray current investigations revealed critical information. This information included requirements for future testing as well as important information about utility systems in the vicinity of transit systems.
