The concept of using metal stripping to stabilize the backfill of earth retaining walls was developed some twenty five years ago. Galvanized coated steel was used to resist the heavy tensile loads inherent of this type of system, while providing soil corrosion protection. However, when these types of retaining walls are adjacent to, and in conjunction with an electrified rail system, they may be susceptible to the detrimental effects of stray current corrosion. This paper presents an assessment of the mechanics, detection and effects of stray currents on a mechanically stabilized earth wall along a direct-current traction power rail system.
