Abstract
Important applications of duplex stainless steel in our oil and chemical industry date from the seventies. Duplex stainless steel is attractive because it combines high mechanical strength, about the same as for carbon steel, and good corrosion resistance particularly against chloride stress corrosion cracking up to about 100 °C.
This paper highlights a number of examples that are typical for the potential as well as the problems associated with this type of material.
