This paper introduces an expert system for selecting, from a technical point of view, external coatings for the protection of new pipelines, providing advice and information on safety considerations. A description of the knowledge acquisition process, and how it was managed in order to include the experiences of several experts in the area, is also described. Special care was taken to produce a self contained system with a good user interface. The system has been validated and is currently being used in several of our field offices as a decision-making tool.
