Both galvanic and impressed current cathodic protection systems have been used to protect the interior of oilfield production vessels and tanks for many years. The initial choice for the type of system selected has usually been determined by the vessel current requirements and the perceived economics for the two types of systems. The use of galvanic versus impressed current systems for two fields in Louisiana has been re-evaluated using the most recent information on anode life, anode replacement costs and equipment repair/replacement costs.
