Abstract
An introduction into the testing of combined mechanical and environmental effects on the performance of structural aerospace and marine alloys is presented. The effect of mechanical and environmental stresses on the degradation of structural alloys will be reviewed in isolation and then in tandem. The complexity of combined effects testing of mechanical and environmental stresses will be highlighted and current efforts into experimental and modelling investigations of these effects will be noted. The need for an improved understanding of combined mechanical and environmental stress effects is motivated.
