The important materials in the petroleum refining industry are metals. Accordingly, there is good emphasis on metallurgy and there's a relative abundance of mechanical and metallurgical engineers. However, a wide variety of nonmetallic materials are also used, including elastomers, plastics, fireproofing, thermal insulation, and of course, coatings and linings. Expertise is needed for those materials as well. A nonmetallics expert may also need to address cathodic protection, refractories, chemical cleaning, and/or chemical treating. As with metallic materials, failures with nonmetallic materials are often the result of improper material selection and the use of material beyond the specific design limits. The limited information available on polymeric materials increases the risk of failure. This paper reviews a number of case histories.
