Industry and Regulators are becoming increasingly aware of the need to assess the performance of ILI tools. This performance consists of a number of separate measures. Probability of Detection is the measure of the tool’s ability to detect an anomaly of a given size and type. Probability of Identification is a measure of the tool’s ability to properly identify the type of anomaly: corrosion, inclusion, or crack. Finally, sizing accuracy is the measure of the tool’s ability to correctly report the size or severity of a given anomaly. In addition, the tool must be able to report the location and position of anomalies so that corrective action may be taken if required.

These measures of tool performance must be assessed and used to evaluate a particular tool based on the requirements of the inspection on a given pipeline.
