Some concrete structures display typical corrosion damage from exposure to aggressive environments such as flooding or water stagnation. This work presents an evaluation of a basement in a reinforced concrete building that is being affected by a water reservoir contaminated with chlorides from Lake Maracaibo. Several structural elements including columns, beams, and slabs were evaluated using physical methods; corrosion potentials and corrosion rates were also determined. The deterioration observed at the base of these columns was initiated by chlorides coming from the phreatic mantle and was further enhanced by water leaks and humidity.
