Abstract
Various corrosion protection technologies are used for prevention of external corrosion on ductile iron pipe in soil environments. Example approaches are provided with guidance to ensure cost-effective solutions. These include: shop coated pipe, shop coated pipe with polyethylene encasement, joint bonding and corrosion monitoring systems, stray current control, life extension cathodic currents, cathodic protection with polyethylene encasement, cathodic protection of shop coated pipe and cathodic protection of pipe with a wax tape coating. Life-cycle cost analyses of alternative strategies are presented.
