The evaluation, design and commissioning of the expanded cathodic system was one of the final phases in the completion of the 2003 Expansion Project, which nearly doubled the size of a major natural gas transmission pipeline system. The use of laptop-based cathodic protection data management software gave the CP contractor’s crews immediate access in the field to historical data and ad-hoc reports. Rugged handheld field computers with integrated GPS sped up data collection and provided a graphical view of the field data that improved data analysis. Rectifier interruption and monitoring was controlled remotely via the pipeline SCADA network. These technologies as well as cell phones, digital cameras and e-mail were used extensively during the cathodic protection system commissioning to complete the project under a tight time schedule.
