As part of a complete pipeline integrity program, mitigation and control of internal corrosion is a key though often overlooked component. The removal of deposits and liquid holdup from a pipeline is important in both integrity management and for optimizing the efficiency of operation. A set of field studies are included to demonstrate the benefits. Flow prediction and modeling is critical in determining which lines contain solid deposits and liquid hold-up. In addition, options for removing solids from unpiggable sections of pipeline are illustrated with a case history. Finally, the basic components in a complete internal corrosion mitigation program are described with particular emphasis on using chemical inhibitors.
