Abstract
The application of cathodic protection to the soil side of asphalt storage tank bottoms requires special considerations due to the elevated temperatures of the tank bottom and surrounding tank cushion. The results of a unique approach to an economical impressed current cathodic protection system will be discussed. The new system incorporates a symmetrical high temperature anode, cables, and factory connections with increased anode current densities. Heavy duty reference electrodes with high temperature watering tubes and thermocouples are included to measure the exact temperatures under the tank, and provide temperature corrected potential measurements. The system is applicable to both new and retrofitted asphalt tank bottoms.
