This paper deals with an expert system developed for the evaluation of the corrosion risks of the components of car body and for selection of pre-coated steel sheets. For specific components, the expert system analyzes the design features relevant to corrosion, the environmental parameters in the geographical area where the car is supposed to run, and the specific corrosion prevention measures adopted. On this basis, the system evaluates the actual risks of corrosion and the expected morphologies (perforating, cosmetic, etc). Furthermore, the expert system analyzes the manufacturing procedure of the component (forming, welding, surface treatments and painting) and it evaluates and selects the products, among a number of available pre-coated steel sheets, which better match the requirements of the component under study. The paper describes its functioning, emphasising in particular the work done for organisation and representation of the corrosion knowledge.
