A new hot-applied plant pipeline coating is described. The new multi-layer coating consists of three layers: A thermally activated primer layer; a crosslinked thermoplastic elastomer intermediate layer; and a fused polyolefin outer layer.

A synergistic relationship arises between the three layers from their interaction during the application process. The heat of application initiates a reaction in the interfacial layers creating a completely fused coating system. This results in strong chemical and mechanical bonds that maximize the performance properties of the coating system. The plant coating technique and equipment is described in detail and actual plant are shown in operation.

The complete coating system includes a field joint coating which when applied, results in a completely fused pipeline coating with no weak links in the corrosion protection system.

The results of laboratory evaluation and field application of the coating will be presented.
