Throughout the USA there are approximately $20 billion worth of bridge repair required on the interstate highway system due to reinforcement corrosion from deicing and sea salt attack. The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) is undertaking work on nondestructive testing and rehabilitation of these structures.

SHRP has carried out a review of cathodic protection systems installed on interstate highway type bridges in the USA and Canada. SHRP was sent information on 287 systems by the State and Provincial Highway Agencies. This paper reviews the responses to the questionnaires filled out by the highway engineers, and the subsequent follow up field surveys that were carried out on several cathodic protection systems.
