Concern over the cost of corrosion in the construction industry has increased significantly in recent years, in both public and private sectors. Research into the causes and mechanisms of corrosion has been paralleled by research into preventative measures. A primary measure in prevention of devastating metal corrosion in the concrete environment is the use of Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) coating. This paper will describe the characteristics of FBE coatings in preventing the premature deterioration at the steel concrete interface of reinforced concrete structures. Information gained in practical application and continued research of reinforcing steel in bridge decks has been documented for nearly two decades. The useful data base of corrosion information is providing a transfer of the FBE technology, furthering its use to applications beyond the bridge deck to include any concrete embedded steel where there is the prospect of debilitating corrosion.
