Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization measurements have been made by either controlling the potential inside or outside a crevice. The significant difference between placing a reference electrode inside and outside a crevice is that the reference electrode inside a crevice much better controls the potential to simulate electrochemical characteristics of crevice corrosion. The pH variation over the cyclic polarization curve was also recorded and indicates that the initiation of crevice corrosion is not due to the pH decrease to a critical value during this accelerated crevice corrosion process.
