Abstract
Exxon identified a need for highly corrosion-resistant precipitation-hardening alloys for use in down hole gas well equipment for severely corrosive environments, such as Mobile Bay. The Exxon fields are expected to contain up to 9.8% hydrogen sulfide with bottom-hole temperatures reaching 420°F (216°C). UNS N07716 was evaluated and specified for use in tubing-retrievable, surface-controlled, subsurface safety valves (TRSV). This paper reviews the service conditions and specific application as well as the processing and testing of UNS N07716 to qualify the material for this application. Slow strain rate test (SSRT) and C-ring data are provided in elevated-temperature sour environments.
