This paper describes the corrosion of carbon steel equipment by an MDEA solution at about 260°F. The corrosion correlated well with the levels of carboxylic acids present, specifically formates and acetates. Plugging of filters and the amine contactors was a major operating problem. Improvements included installation of austenitic and duplex stainless steel equipment, water washing of the sour gas before contact with the amine, periodic caustic additions, and use of an antioxidant chemical.
