Abstract
The paper describes an expert system, called PREVLEA (Pressure Vessel Life Extension Analysis), to assess the fitness-for-service of ferritic steel pressure vessels containing flaws. The expert system was developed to capture the expertise of a metallurgist and the analysis procedures of ASME Section XI Article IWA-3000 and Appendix A. The considerations and the procedures are presented. A case study is given to demonstrate the system's application. Expert systems are an emerging class of software tools to empower professionals with the most efficient, effective, and consistent application of the increasingly complex rules of their field.
