There is a general consensus in industry that the corrosion of steel piles driven into undisturbed soils is insignificant and as a result corrosion control considerations are oftentimes ignored. However, the corrosion investigation of a water treatment plant intake structure revealed that under certain conditions significant corrosion can take place on the steel piles sufficient enough in magnitude to jeopardize the integrity of the primary structure. Therefore, corrosion considerations such as provisions for future corrosion mitigation through the addition of cathodic protection are warranted during the initial design stage of certain pile supported structures especially in view of the fact that retrofitting corrosion control on existing pile supported structures is oftentimes physically unfeasible and economically impractical.
