Abstract
This paper updates the authors' previous papers on the subject designed to help coatings engineers, specifiers, and users to (1) identify suitable paint and coating systems for specific industrial atmospheric environments, (2) calculate current approximate installed costs and life for each, and (3) determine the most cost-effective systems. Costing for both new construction and maintenance are included.
The list of generic classes of products and systems has been updated and includes high solids and VOC-conformant products. Field and fabricator-shop painting and surface-preparation costs, and material costs also have been updated.
Coating-system life is further defined and now includes "Ideal/Optimum" life, when maintenance painting begins at 3%-5% breakdown, and "Practical" life, when maintenance begins at 5%-7% breakdown.
Typical maintenance repainting sequences, their composition, and effect on long-term costs and system performance also are reviewed.
