Abstract
Testing methods for severe service evaluation of elastomers have not given results that are reproducible among laboratories or even within a given laboratory. The results are influenced by (1) the volume of reactant, (2) critical properties of gases, (3) compensating effects, (4) elapsed time after exposure until measurement. Pitfalls and remedies are identified and examined.
