In the fluidized bed combustion of coal, both the CaO sulfur-oxide absorber and the CaSO4 reaction product are potential corrosion agents. 1000-hour laboratory tests of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels as well as nickel-base alloys demonstrated that in air at 1550 F (843 C), CaO accelerates oxidation rates of these alloys. There was no evidence of sulfidation by the CaSO4 under these conditions. Ferritic stainless steels were most resistant to attack by the calcium compounds.
