This paper describes severe wear which occurred at the bare tube/refractory transition of a commercial size (49.9 MW) circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler. A novel technique which involves use of flow deflectors or shelves to control the attack is described. Although the wear in this boiler was considered to be among the most severe of the operating CFB boilers, it was successfully controlled with almost no reduction in plant production. The plant has operated at full capacity almost continuously since start-up in early 1988. In addition to the water wall wear, erosion problems with some other boiler components are described briefly.
