Procedures for cleaning lined tank cars and unlined tank cars for lining application are generally not well defined. When an operator of a tank car fleet requires that a tank car be cleaned, it is usually done with little thought as to the determination of the proper method of cleaning in order to obtain the desired results Improper cleaning procedures used for a lined tank car could result in lining failure at the time of cleaning or after it is placed back in service. The same holds true for an unlined tank car being cleaned for lining application. Improper cleaning procedures could result in lining failure during lining application or soon after the car is placed back in service. It is important that cleaning procedures are planned with pertinent factors in mind and that the cleaning procedure is carried out according to this plan.
