Effect of grain size on SSC resistance, though being important for material design, has been little studied. In this paper, effect of austenite grain size of low alloy tempered martensite steel was investigated using constant load SSC testers, considering their correlation with chemical compositions. Rs value (SSC threshold stress / yield strength) begins to decrease with increase in yield strength at the yield strength equal to σc85. Fractografic study reveals that σc85 corresponds to the minimum yield strength for the occurence of intergranular fracture. σc85 rises with refinement in austenite grains, while Rs is not affected by austenite grain size at yield strengths below σc85c85 at a constant grain size is also influenced by chemical compositions. Based on the experimental results, the model for effect of austenite grain size on σc85 is proposed.
