Manganese fixing bacteria are found in many inland waters. These bacteria include Gallionella, Spaerotilus, Crenothrix, Leptothrix, Clonothrix and Lieskeella. The bacteria do not attack the stainless steels. They create the conditions leading to pitting and/or crevice corrosion. Pitting corrosion of the stainless steels comes about by a reaction of the chlorine or hypochlorite biocide with the manganese dioxide deposit through a complex mechanism through which hydrochloric acid is generated. A proposed mechanism is given. Preventative measures are suggested including cleaning and alloy systems that are highly resistant to the proposed corrosion mechanism.
