Erosion corrosion in oil and gas production has been reviewed in comparison to the recommendations contained in API-RP-14E for the limiting velocity for the onset of erosion corrosion. The API 14E formula is found to be a good indicator for the onset of erosion corrosion of carbon steel in oil and gas systems. However, the onset of erosion corrosion is proposed to occur in corrosive oil and gas wells coincident with the transition to the annular mist flow regme in multi-phase flow. Sand is not necessary for erosion, but will probably cause it at lower velocities. The presence of a much stronger surface film allows alloy tubulars and corrosion inhibitors both to be effective in raising the velocity before the onset of erosion corrosion in oil and gas production.
