Abstract
A full spectrum of information delivery systems is available to promulgate corrosion control information within CPI (Chemical Process Industry) companies. Within this spectrum, expert systems are the most appropriate medium for situations where an inquirer knows that he or she needs knowledge, but either cannot define the knowledge required or cannot locate the source of that knowledge without outside help. The high cost of developing expert systems favors their development in generic form for many users. The value of generic expert systems can be substantially increased by building in the ability for users to add their own proprietary information. Even then, CPI staff may be reluctant to use the systems unless they are required to do so.
