Abstract
New electrochemical testing techniques reveal that within-grade variations of corrosion resistance of Type 316L stainless steel plate used in manufacture of paper machine headboxes are large and not readily predicted without a direct test. A controlled-inclusion quality of 316L designed for improved machinability and electropolishing was shown to be within the range of corrosion resistance found for randomly selected commercial Type 316L stainless steel plates. Variation of corrosion resistance as a function of section tested, characteristic of all commercial Type 316L stainless steel, was shown. The importance of steelmaking practice and its influence on details of non-metallic inclusions present was demonstrated.
