The TVA 20-MW AFBC Pilot Plant began operations in March 1982, and in most part operated on an Eastern U.S. Bituminous low-chlorine (~0.02%) KY #9 coal. During 1986, the Pilot Plant switched to a high-chlorine (~0.3%) KY #9 coal, and then in 1987 the Pilot Plant operated on a Western U.S. sub-bituminous (Sarpy Creek) coal. Most of the operations employed underbed feed mode. During the Sarpy Creek coal operations the plant also operated in the overbed feed mode. Uncooled corrosion test samples of engineering alloys were exposed to the bed environment during these periods to determine the effect of different feedstocks and the fuel feed mode on the corrosion performance. Contrary to previous published data, the results show that increased chlorine content of the coal can accelerate corrosion of some of the less resistant alloys. The results also show that at comparable exposure periods, the corrosion is more pronounced with Western U.S. Sub-Bituminous than with Eastern U.S. Bituminous coal. The limited results also show that more wastage occurs during underbed feed operations than during overbed feed.
