Abstract
The objective of this paper is to review the material selection for an HF Alkylation plant and materials problems encountered in the first six years of operation. Three basic materials are used in HF Alkylation plant construction, carbon steel, 70-30 Copper-Nickel and Monel Alloy 400. Although the service factor of the plant has been good, three types of materials problems have been encountered. These are, inadequate quality control of material identification and stress relief during construction, loose guidelines for controlling the propane alumina treaters which caused corrosion and higher water levels in the plant than is optimum for corrosion control. The importance of Corrosion Engineers maintaining close contact with operations is stressed.
Finally the advantages and disadvantages of chemical cleaning of HF Alkylation plants is reviewed, as related to plant maintenance considerations and corrosion control.
