Effect of heat treatments on resistance to intergranular corrosion of type 304ULC (ultra low carbon) stainless steels in boiling nitric-dichromate solution was studied. Aging at the temperatures between 650 and 850°C was found to reduce the susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. Transmission electron micrographs of the aged specimens did not show any presence of precipitates at the grain boundaries. The result of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analysis suggested that increased corrosion resistance after aging at these temperatures can be attributed to the decrease in sulfur concentration at the grain boundaries.
