Sulphide stress cracking tests performed in accordance with NACE TM 0177 are not ideally suited to characterice the SSC behaviour of line pipe steels. Major drawbacks are the severeness of initial hydrogenation, the small volume of material tested, and the absence of residual stresses and surface scales. Full scale testing counteracts these drawbacks, thus allowing a more realistic assesment to be made. Also during full scale testing the effect of hydrogen induced cracking and internal fluctuating pressure can be evaluated.
