Abstract
The general purpose of this composite material is to repair damage to metallic components caused by pitting, erosion or cavitation corrosion. Typically parts include turbine/pump impellers, dam gates, miter gates, heat exchanger, boiler condensate pipes, etc. The repair material is comprised of a glassy matrix formulated to bond chemically to the corroded metallic substrate. The tightly adhering corrosion products are dissolved by this glassy matrix and become part of the composite. The fracture toughness of the matrix is increased by reinforcing with high strength ceramic fibers, or whiskers. The fiber reinforced glassy composite can be applied to the structure to be repaired in a furnace or in the field by an acetylene torch.
